Today we started class with the "wraparound strategy," selecting a line from the narrative poem "The Hangman" to read aloud, and when read aloud, one student said that it evoked "the poem within the poem." (Damayanti)
During the debrief of the activity and the discussion afterwards, you said this poem illustrates bystander behavior. You said that when people do not speak up for others, it often has to do with fear.
Then we watched ten minutes of Chiamanda Adichie's speech, "The Danger of a Single Story." (You can find this video under our main unit page "Dangerous Colors."
Due next class:
1. Read + annotate the speech "The Danger of a Single Story" (at least 4-5 annotations per page of the transcript).
2. Vocabulary: choose at least 4 vocabulary words, identify the part of speech, provide a definition, and write a sentence using the word.
(See the vocabulary bank on the back page)
3. Writing Extensions/journal prompts: Choose 1 of the 4 prompts and compose a well-developed response in your Writer's Notebook. Incorporate at least 4 vocabulary words from the speech in your response and underline them.
