The Awakening: This past week we continued to examine characterization, characters' relationships with each other, tension/conflict, symbolism and motif, themes in Kate Chopin's The Awakening. We read the first three chapters of Writing Essays About Literature and discussed the relationship between genre and meaning.

Read & annotate chapters 1-2 of Toni Morrison's Song of Solomon
- Griffith writes: "The reasons we like certain genres are part of the 'meaning' of what we read--the pleasures the genres give us a well as the ideas they convey. We can pinpoint that meaning by investigating the appeal of genres. Why do we and other people like them?" (28)
